His cries mingled with hers
amid the longings of shepherds
and angels and men from afar

against the ascendant darkness, long
vigilant for even the faint echo
of a searching hope.

For he was midwifed in
the humility of flesh made
once, long ago, in the first light

of Creation now fallen into
sin and tyranny and pain and
the chains of an alien power.

But as he cried and she rejoiced
the veil was pulled back and
heaven, long hidden, was revealed

as choirs of men and angels
and all flesh took up the
song: gloria in excelsis Deo

Against the darkness, Love has spoken.
Alleluia, Christ is born.
